Timeline Guide

Sell an exotic car fast: the realistic timeline

Honest timelines for the four serious channels (private match-making, dealer wholesale, auction consignment, classifieds), what determines speed, and how to compress when you have a hard deadline.

"Fast" means different things to different sellers. A retail buyer wanting to upgrade in 6 weeks is fast. An estate executor needing to close 4 cars in 3 weeks is fast in a different way. A tax-timing sale needing to close before December 31 is fast on a calendar. This guide walks through realistic timelines for each channel and how to compress when you have a hard deadline.

The four channels and their real timelines

1. Private match-making (Fast Auto Exit)

  • Submission to first market read: under 24 business hours
  • Submission to qualified buyer introduction: typically under 7 days
  • Buyer introduction to negotiated agreement: 1 to 7 days (varies by buyer and car complexity)
  • Agreement to wire received: 5 to 14 days (depends on transport scheduling, lender payoff if applicable, and buyer's due-diligence preferences)
  • Typical submission-to-wire: 2 to 4 weeks

2. Dealer wholesale (specialty luxury dealer or CarGurus-style instant offer)

  • Submission to instant offer: same day to 48 hours
  • Offer acceptance to vehicle pickup: 2 to 7 business days
  • Pickup to wire: 1 to 5 business days
  • Typical submission-to-wire: 5 to 14 business days
  • Trade-off: net is typically 15 to 30 percent below private retail

3. Auction consignment (Bring a Trailer, RM Sotheby's, Gooding, Mecum)

  • Submission to acceptance decision: 3 to 14 days
  • Acceptance to listing live (BaT) or consignment to event date (live auction): 1 to 8 weeks
  • Listing or auction window: 7 days (BaT) or 1 to 2 days (live auction)
  • Sale to transport scheduling: 1 to 4 weeks
  • Transport to wire: 1 to 3 weeks
  • Typical submission-to-wire: 6 to 14 weeks

4. Public classifieds (Cars.com, CarGurus listings, Hemmings)

  • Listing live: 1 to 3 days
  • Listing to serious offer: 4 to 16 weeks on luxury cars
  • Offer to closing: 2 to 6 weeks (private buyer due diligence, transport, payment)
  • Typical submission-to-wire: 12 to 26 weeks
  • Trade-off: high tire-kicker volume and ongoing listing management

What determines speed on a private match

  • Configuration desirability. Sought-after color and options combinations match faster (often within 24 hours). Unusual configurations may take longer to find the right buyer (5 to 14 days).
  • Documentation completeness. Complete service history and clean Carfax accelerate the match. Documentation gaps require more buyer due diligence.
  • Price flexibility. Sellers willing to consider a buyer's reasonable counter-offer match faster than sellers anchored on the high end of comparable range.
  • Title status. Clean title in seller's name closes fastest. Active liens add 5 to 10 business days for the payoff process. Estate or trust titles add 1 to 3 weeks for documentation.
  • Transport logistics. Buyers in major collector markets (LA, NYC, Miami, Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta) typically schedule transport faster than buyers in remote markets.

How to compress when you have a hard deadline

  1. Provide complete documentation on submission. VIN, full service history, recent Carfax, photos, and any independent PPI reports you have. This eliminates 2 to 5 days of back-and-forth.
  2. Be reachable. Specify your preferred contact times in the submission. Buyers prefer sellers who respond within hours during business days.
  3. Pre-arrange your lender payoff if applicable. Request the 10-day payoff quote from your lender as soon as you submit the car. This is typically same-day from the lender and eliminates a delay later.
  4. Use third-party escrow if the buyer requests it. Slightly more setup time but accelerates the buyer's commitment to closing.
  5. Be flexible on transport scheduling. Letting the buyer choose the carrier and date typically moves transport up by 3 to 5 days.
  6. Communicate the deadline transparently. Mark your submission as time-pressured. We surface this to matched buyers so they self-select for sellers who need to close fast.

What the fastest realistic timeline looks like

A clean-title car in active retail demand (sought-after Porsche GT3, Ferrari 488, McLaren 720S, G63 AMG), submitted with complete documentation, agreed-on a buyer-friendly price, with the seller available to coordinate transport same-day: we have closed transactions in 7 calendar days from submission to wire. That is the genuine floor; not every car fits the profile.

The realistic median is 14 to 18 calendar days. The realistic ceiling is 30 days for cars with documentation gaps or unusual configurations.

Tell us about your car
The 17-character VIN is required so buyers in our network can verify the car's specs, title history, and recall status before signaling interest. Without a valid VIN we cannot match you with qualified buyers. The VIN is printed on the driver-side dashboard at the base of the windshield, on the door jamb sticker, and on your title and registration documents.
