Title & Paperwork

Clean title
A vehicle title with no brands or qualifiers - the car has not been declared a total loss, salvage, flood, or otherwise compromised. A clean title in the seller's legal name is the baseline expectation for a private luxury car sale.
Salvage title
A title brand applied when an insurer declares a vehicle a total loss. A salvage-titled car cannot be legally driven until repaired and re-inspected. A salvage brand significantly reduces value.
Rebuilt title
A title brand applied to a previously salvage-titled vehicle that has been repaired and passed a state inspection to return to the road. It carries the accident history permanently and reduces value relative to a clean title.
Branded title
Any title carrying a qualifier - salvage, rebuilt, flood, hail, lemon-law buyback, or similar. A branded title materially affects a car's value and its buyer pool.
Lien
A legal claim a lender holds against a vehicle as security for a loan. A car with an active lien cannot be sold with clear title until the loan is paid off and the lender releases the lien.
Lienholder
The lender that holds a lien on a financed vehicle. The lienholder is listed on the title and must release the lien before clear title passes to a buyer.
Lien release
The document a lender provides confirming a loan is paid in full and its claim on the vehicle is removed, clearing the way for title transfer.
Bill of sale
A document recording the sale of a vehicle - price, date, VIN, and both parties' details. Recommended in every state and required in several.
Odometer disclosure
A federally required statement of a vehicle's mileage at the time of title transfer, mandatory for vehicles up to 20 model years old. Usually printed on the title document itself.
Title washing
The illegal or improper practice of moving a vehicle between states to remove a title brand. A reason to run a full national history report rather than relying on a single state's title.

Transaction

Match-making service
A service that connects a private seller with a qualified private buyer, documents a commission, and steps back so the parties transact directly. It does not take title or hold funds. This is the Fast Auto Exit model.
Commission disclosure
A written agreement, signed by both seller and buyer before any introduction, stating the match-making commission amount, the split, and the terms under which it applies.
NDA (non-disclosure agreement)
A contract restricting what a prospective buyer may do with information about a privately listed car - photos, VIN, price, seller identity. It is the mechanism that makes a private listing genuinely private.
Escrow
A neutral third party that holds funds during a transaction and releases them when agreed conditions are met. Used in some higher-value or cross-state private car sales.
10-day payoff quote
A statement from a lender giving the exact amount required to pay off a car loan, valid through a specified date. Required when selling a financed car.
Tail period
The window after a match-making introduction (commonly 12 months) during which a commission applies if the introduced parties transact. It prevents parties from bypassing the matchmaker.

Auction & Market

Hammer price
The winning bid amount at auction, before the buyer's premium is added. The seller's commission is calculated against the hammer price.
Buyer's premium
A percentage fee an auction house adds to the hammer price, paid by the buyer - commonly 10 to 15 percent at major collector car auctions.
Reserve
The minimum price a seller will accept at auction. If bidding does not reach the reserve, the car does not sell.
No-sale (ROUH)
An auction lot that fails to meet its reserve and does not sell - 'reserve out, unsold here.' A no-sale can dampen a car's future marketability.
Comparable sales (comps)
Recent sales of similar vehicles used to estimate a car's market value - the foundation of any credible valuation.
Hagerty Price Guide
An industry-standard reference that publishes condition-graded value bands for collector and exotic cars, updated quarterly.
Actual cash value (ACV)
The depreciated market value of a car at the time of an insurance loss, as the insurer calculates it - the default settlement basis on standard auto policies.
Agreed value
An insurance structure where the car's value is set and documented in advance, so a total loss is settled at that figure with no depreciation dispute. The right structure for collectible cars.
Diminished value
The loss in a car's market value caused by accident history, even after a flawless repair, because the market discounts a recorded accident.
Market correction
A broad downward movement in collector or exotic car values, as opposed to a change specific to one model.

Condition & Authenticity

Matching numbers
A car whose major components - typically engine and transmission - are the original units it was built with, verified by their stamped numbers. A significant value factor on collector cars.
Provenance
The documented ownership and history of a car - prior owners, race history, notable events, and supporting paperwork. Strong provenance adds substantial value on significant cars.
Original paint
Factory-applied paint that has never been refinished. Confirmed original paint commands a premium on collector-grade cars; a paint depth gauge reveals refinished panels.
Survivor car
An original, unrestored car that has survived in well-preserved condition. Survivors are valued for their originality and as a reference for correct restoration.
Barn find
A car discovered after long storage, typically unrestored and in as-found condition. Genuine barn finds of significant cars attract strong collector interest.
Patina
The character a car's original finish acquires with age and honest use. On certain collector cars, original patina is valued over a fresh restoration.
Restoration
The process of returning a car to original or better-than-original condition. A rotisserie restoration is the most thorough level; restoration quality and who performed it materially affect value.
Concours
Short for concours d'elegance - a judged car show where vehicles are evaluated on condition, originality, and presentation. Concours awards become part of a car's provenance.
Numbers-matching
Synonymous with matching numbers - the original drivetrain components verified by stamped numbers.
Marque certification
An authenticity program run by a manufacturer's heritage division - such as Ferrari Classiche or Lamborghini Polo Storico - that certifies a car's originality and correctness.
Pre-purchase inspection (PPI)
An independent inspection by a marque specialist before a sale closes, identifying deferred maintenance, hidden damage, and authenticity concerns. Standard practice on any car of meaningful value.

Documentation

VIN (vehicle identification number)
The unique 17-character identifier assigned to a vehicle, used to verify identity, decode build information, and check history. Should match across the title, dashboard, and door jamb.
Build sheet
Factory documentation listing how a specific car was originally equipped - options, colors, and configuration. Used to confirm a car is as represented.
Window sticker (Monroney)
The original factory price label affixed to a new car, listing standard equipment, options, and MSRP. The original window sticker is desirable documentation that supports configuration claims.
Service history
The documented record of a car's maintenance and repairs. A complete, date-stamped service file from authorized specialists is the single strongest predictor of a good ownership experience.
Carfax / AutoCheck
Commercial vehicle history reports that aggregate title, accident, ownership, and service records by VIN. A starting point for due diligence, not a complete substitute for a PPI.
NMVTIS
The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System, a federal database of vehicle title and brand information used to detect title washing and salvage history.

Body & Design

Coupe
A closed two-door body style, typically with a fixed roof and a sporting profile.
Convertible
A car with a folding or removable roof. Manufacturer-specific names include Spider, Spyder, Cabriolet, Roadster, and Volante.
Spider / Spyder
Manufacturer terms for an open-top car - Spider is used by Ferrari and Alfa Romeo, Spyder by Porsche and others. Functionally a convertible.
Targa
A body style with a removable center roof panel and a fixed rear structure, originated by Porsche.
Shooting brake
A two-door car with an extended wagon-like rear roofline - a niche, design-driven body style.
Grand tourer (GT)
A car designed for high-speed long-distance driving in comfort, balancing performance with refinement.
Coachbuilt
A car whose body was built by a specialist coachbuilder rather than the original manufacturer - historically common on pre-war luxury cars and revived for modern limited specials.

Drivetrain & Engineering

Mid-engine
An engine mounted between the axles, behind the cabin - a layout favored for the balanced weight distribution it gives supercars.
Naturally aspirated
An engine that draws air without forced induction (no turbocharger or supercharger). Naturally aspirated engines, especially V12s, are increasingly prized as the industry turns to forced induction and electrification.
Forced induction
Boosting an engine's power with a turbocharger or supercharger, which compresses the intake air.
Carbon monocoque
A single-piece carbon-fiber chassis structure - extremely strong and light, central to modern supercar engineering, pioneered for road cars by McLaren.
PHEV (plug-in hybrid)
A vehicle combining a combustion engine with a battery that can be charged externally - the architecture of recent halo cars such as the Ferrari SF90 and Lamborghini Revuelto.
Homologation
Building a road-going version of a car to satisfy the rules requiring a certain number of production examples before a model can compete in motorsport. Homologation specials are highly collectible.

Protection & Care

PPF (paint protection film)
A clear urethane film applied over paint that physically absorbs rock chips and light scratches - the only protection product that resists physical impact.
Ceramic coating
A silica-based liquid polymer that bonds to the clear coat, adding hydrophobic behavior, gloss, and chemical resistance for years. It does not protect against rock chips.
Paint correction
Mechanically removing defects - swirl marks, holograms, light scratches - from the clear coat to restore a flawless finish.
Swirl marks
Fine circular scratches in the clear coat, most often caused by improper washing. Highly visible on dark cars and removable only by paint correction.

Market & Dealer

MSRP
Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price - the price the manufacturer recommends, before any dealer markup or discount.
ADM (additional dealer markup)
An amount a dealer adds above MSRP on an in-demand car, common on allocation-controlled exotics and limited-production models.
Allocation
The right to purchase a limited-production car from a manufacturer, often awarded to established customers. Allocation-controlled cars frequently trade above MSRP.
Certified pre-owned (CPO)
A manufacturer-backed used-car program with an inspection and extended warranty, sold at a premium through authorized dealers.
Dealer wholesale
The price a dealer pays to acquire a car for resale - built around retail value minus margin, reconditioning, and carrying cost. Typically well below private retail on luxury cars.
Private retail
The price a car achieves in a direct private sale to an end buyer - generally higher than dealer wholesale and the target outcome of private match-making.
Instant cash offer
An algorithmic offer from a dealer-network platform to buy a car immediately. Fast, but typically priced at dealer-wholesale levels on luxury cars.
